Tensions in Moyale escalated after Somali Region and Somalia national flags were raised at an office on the Oromo side of the town on 18 October 2026. Demonstrations by Oromo residents on 21 October were quickly ended as violence intensified. Between 21 and 30 October, heavily armed Somali militia and Somali Region forces reportedly killed Oromo residents of Moyale and surrounding districts and burned their homes. OSG reports little or no response from federal or regional Ethiopian forces.
By 1 November 2026, more than 50,000 people had reportedly fled to Kenya, and thousands more to Yabelo, Mega, Bokku and Dubuluk. The same attacks are recorded separately as killings and as destruction of homes.
