Civilians are being impoverished by authorities demanding taxes and other payments, as elsewhere in Oromia. For example, residents of Gobu Walda village, Bako Tibe district, West Showa, have been demanded to pay thousands of birr for ‘village office construction’ despite exposure to looting of their properties at gunpoint (ONM, 2 April).
