Torture / ill-treatment by government forces in Negele, Guji (20 Mar 2025)

Local government cadres were reportedly coercing residents of Negele Arsi district in Arsi to provide labour to build their offices, and government troops began on 20 March to force them to contribute money to pay their salaries and support their military operations, despite ‘severe inflation, widespread hunger and lack of basic necessities’ especially affecting children. Farmers in Munessa and Sagure districts of Arsi who cultivated potatoes are now being compelled to sow wheat instead, with many facing beatings, fines, and denial of access to fertilizer.
