Col. Gamachu Ayana was malnourished following months of detention before he was detained in July 2020. When he was transferred from Awash to Galan at the end of July 2021, he was said to look ‘like a skeleton’. Human Rights Watch visited Galan prison during this period but Col. Gamachu was transferred elsewhere during their visit.
