Addis Standard reported on 10 July that about 100 students of Debark University, North Gonder, were kidnapped near Garba Guracha town in North Showa of Oromia Region, on 3 July while travelling back to Finfinnee, and that families were distressed by ransom demands of 500-700,000 Birr,62 and, later, one million Birr. The later report from the online magazine quoted the Oromia Communication Service Bureau which stated that a government security operation had freed 160 out of 167 kidnapped students, contrary to claims by parents of some students of their continued detention.
