On 8 March, Addis Standard quoted from a statement by the Oromo Physicians Association that in Borana zone people were dying increasingly from treatable and preventable conditions – hunger, dehydration, measles and water-borne diseases. Acute malnutrition was over 16% overall. 40% of pregnant and breast-feeding mothers were moderately malnourished. Not only drought, disease and conflict affect Borana zone. OCHA reported on 3 April that heavy rain and flash floods had damaged shelters for 27,000 IDPs in Borana and increased the risk of cholera and other water-borne diseases.
