Torture / ill-treatment in Oda Bultum, West Hararghe (6 Jul 2026)

The beatings included an assault on Aniisaa Jamaal and all of her three young children in Baddeessa town, Oda Bultum district, causing severe injuries from rifle butts. Conditions of detention amount to cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment. EEPA reported on 6 July that detentions in East Hararge included that of an independent candidate for the House of People’s Representatives in the 1 June election, Dr Habtamu Alemu. He was being held in a cell in Dire Dawa measuring only 1m. by 80cm. He was reported to be ‘prohibited from using the toilet.’ He was detained because he had complained of irregularities in the election.
