Torture / ill-treatment by government militia in Burayu, Special Zone Surrounding Finfinne (23 Jun 2026)

On 23 June, ONM reported that government militia in Ashawa Meedaa in the Dirree Cirrachaa district of Burayu sub-city, were targeting youth on public roads, beating them and taking their smartphones before detaining them on fabricated charges of having OLA-related images on their devices. Their families have had to pay 20,000 to 30,000 birr to secure their release. Those with families which are unable to raise this money remain in detention, where they continue to be mistreated. Dozens have reportedly been held for more than 8-9 months in Aannee Diimaa, Dirree Sololiyaa and the 3rd District prison.
