Saddoo kebele in Meta district became an open-air interrogation centre in June, when cadres picked out families of Oromo nationalists among the assembled villagers and threatened them with eviction if their children did not return from the forest. Extra militia were deployed to extort an arbitrary tax of 8,700 birr per person, in addition to 2,000 birr for ‘road improvement.’
