Killing by government militia in Guji (May 2026)

The violence in May had been precipitated by preparations for the June election with the erection and burning of regional flags after the establishment of a Guji zone polling station in Gubboo Heema. Unarmed villagers attending the market in Gubboo Heema were attacked by Sidama Region Special Force police and militia. Farmland and homes were burnt, schools and crops destroyed, livestock killed and thousands displaced.
