Detention in Meta district, East Hararghe (May 2026)

Failure to pay resulted in violence or detention as noted above. In cases when large amounts were charged to land-owners, the threat of eviction or land seizure was used. For example, Razzuu Adam Tuulee, was violently expelled from his ancestral land in Meta district in May. Many households fled from villages in Meta district, such as Hawwii Bilisummaa, Ifa Biiftuu, Bakkalchaa, Wal-tahaa, Dhoqqee 1st, and Dhoqqee 2nd. Women who fled with their families into the bush to avoid the harassment and looting in these villages included Asia Abdullah Musa (mother of 7), Zeyini Abdullah Adamee (mother of 5), and Ashiraqaa Ahimad Musa (mother of 4).
