Abduction / extortion / forced conscription in Deder, East Hararghe (19 Sep 2025)

Residents of Baraka village, Shanan Dhugo district, West Hararge, told ONM ‘They demand money from us every day. We don't have anything to eat or live on. We don’t know who to appeal to for solutions. So please be our voice and spread our problems to other nations.’ ONM reported on 19 September that the people in rural and urban areas of Deder district, East Hararge, are ‘being tortured’ ‘in the name of taxes, support for the armed forces . . ., militias, buses, Red Cross, school registration fees and others’ and are being arrested for nonpayment. Land taxes have been increased so some are paying 5.000-20,000 birr.
